Garga'oon

>> Sunday, August 5, 2012

Friday night was Garga'oon (قرقاعون) also called Nasifa (ناصفة), which is the half-way mark of Ramadan. Not all Muslim countries celebrate this.

Our Arab friends say that it's just like the American Halloween. Though there are some similarities, it seems so different to us.

It's similar in that the children go house to house with a bag and get candy.

It's different in that the kids don't dress up as characters. They dress up in traditional dress. There isn't anything scary about Garga'oon like Halloween. It's just a sweet time for the community to be together and spoil the kids with candy!

Here's a picture of all three of us dressed and ready to go!

Here's the "after" picture. They were happy to have their bags full of candy!!

Dear Jeni-
I just called out to Annie, "Oh, look, it's Mrs. Saltzman in a birkah! (sp?) To which she jumped up from her writing and came over and simply said, "Wow." We think it's pretty cool, Jeni. (It's the fact that you wear jeans so much of the time that amazes me, actually.) And Joseph and Faith...well, they look pretty sharp, too! (Katie likes Faith's pretty pink dress.)
